What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is given by using simple personalized exercises that strengthen the 21 muscles of your face and retrain certain movements of the mouth. Transforming oral habits like mouth breathing, improper swallowing, and misplaced tongue posture improves the quality of life-by providing a better night sleep, opening of your airway or improving your smile.
The Four Core Goals
Improve Nasal Breathing
Breathing through your nose stimulates nitric oxide in your body, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery making you feel energized. It aids your immune system by filtering harmful particles from entering your body to prevent infections. Warming the air and creating humidity as you inhale enhances the lungs. OMT’s goal is to have your mouth closed and breathe comfortably through your nose day and night.
Learn MoreProper Tongue Posture
The tongue should rest up in your palate. Not on the floor of your mouth or resting on the back sides of your teeth. A misplaced tongue can cause ortho relapse, tongue thrust issues, improper swallowing and speech concerns. A tongue tie could be the culprit. Having a dentist release the tongue tie will help but therapy is needed to retrain and strengthen the muscles before and after a release.
Learn MoreCorrect Swallow Pattern
Correct placement of the tongue while eating is up in the palate. To swallow the tongue should not move but food is pushed back to the throat and swallowed by the back of the tongue. Gerd and being extra gassy is associated with improper chewing and swallowing large amounts of air. OMT will strengthen the tongue and retrain the swallow pattern.
Learn MoreLip Seal
Lips together and breathing through the nose is the optimum goal. Lips open means you are most likely breathing through the mouth. This creates many problems such as gum disease, poor posture, decrease in energy, digestive issues. Correcting the lip posture may include orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth. OMT can be implemented without interrupting dental or ortho treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is an exercise-based program designed to retrain the muscles of the mouth, tongue, lips, and face. The goal is to restore healthy patterns for breathing, chewing, swallowing, and resting tongue posture. Therapy is customized to each client through consultations, exams, and tailored treatment plans.
Unlike general physical therapy, which focuses on the body’s large muscle groups, OMT targets the muscles of the face and mouth. Therapy is carried out through guided exercises and personalized home practice, helping address oral function, airway health, and oral habits rather than using machines or gym-based movements.
OMT can help with mouth breathing, tongue thrust, speech concerns, thumb sucking, sleep-disordered breathing, snoring, TMJ issues, orthodontic relapse, and tongue-tie related challenges. It supports both children and adults in improving oral function, airway health, and long-term stability for orthodontic and dental treatments.
Consultations typically last 20–30 minutes. Comprehensive exams run 60–90 minutes, while therapy sessions are scheduled as 30–45 minute virtual visits depending on your treatment plan.
The number of sessions depends on your needs and therapy goals. Limited therapy programs usually include 6–11 virtual sessions, while comprehensive programs may last up to 12 months with ongoing support. The exact plan is customized to fit your needs.
At this time, insurance is not accepted directly. However, we provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Some insurance providers do cover myofunctional therapy, so it’s best to confirm with your plan.
